LAGOS HOUSE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN ON TRANSPORT RALLIES SUPPORT FOR LASPA

The Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s Committee on Transport, Hon. Temitope Adedeji Adewale has urged Lagosians to support the implementation of the Lagos State Parking Policy (LASPA). 

He made the appeal during a working visit to the LASPA Office at Ikeja on Tuesday, alongside other members of the House of Assembly Committee, including Hon. Yinka Esho (Mushin 2), Hon. Lukman Orelope (Alimosho 1), Hon. Lanre Afinni (Lagos Island 2), Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester (Epe 2), as well as some members of staff from LAHA. 

Adewale emphasised that the committee’s visit was aimed at reinforcing the House of Assembly’s commitment to the authority’s initiatives and highlighting the importance of the parking policy for the state’s development. He praised the General Manager and staff of LASPA for their professional conduct and dedication to eliminating indiscriminate parking and alleviating parking-induced traffic congestion in Lagos.

“We are here today on a courtesy visit to stay informed about your daily activities and operations. It is important to update committee members on the Authority’s activities and recent achievements, especially for our new members who need to familiarise themselves with your mandate”, Adewale stated.

The Chairman expressed satisfaction with the recent reforms in parking management, noting visible improvements, particularly in the Central Business District (CBD). He stated that introducing lane markings and directional signage has significantly enhanced parking efficiency and reduced traffic-related issues.

Assuring the Authority of the committee’s readiness to provide all necessary support for the successful execution of its mandate, he commended LASPA’s accomplishments in off-street parking and expressed confidence in their upcoming management of regulated on-street parking.

In her remarks, the General Manager of LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu expressed gratitude for the committee’s support, just as she provided insights into the Authority’s mandate, activities, and achievements.

While addressing some questions raised by members of the committee, Adelabu emphasised the Authority’s commitment to delivering quality service, saying, “We are intentional about quality service delivery. Parking can be quite contentious, especially with many hidden stakeholders previously managing it. The House plays a crucial role in our efforts, and we rely on your full backing to implement our policies effectively. We appreciate the consistent support from the House and look forward to its continuation”.

The General Manager also addressed the involvement of local governments in parking regulation, reiterating that a mutually beneficial relationship exists between state and local authorities. She clarified that the government does not charge residential property owners for parking on their premises; however, fees apply for using government setbacks. 

Additionally, Adelabu announced that the pilot phase of the on-street parking initiative will begin later this year, setting the stage for full operations in the coming year. “We are finalising the technical aspects and establishing a Command and Control Centre to ensure effective management. Everything is in place for that, and we believe it will redefine the space in Lagos”.

“Lane markings and signage installation are already ongoing in key areas, including Ikeja, Surulere, Ikoyi-Obalende, Victoria Island, and Lekki, to facilitate the upcoming on-street parking operations”, she added.
