West Nile Virus

0

The West Nile Virus (WNV) made headlines last month as a 15-year old was diagnosed with the first case in Barbados. This mosquito-borne illness is a serious concern and understanding how it spreads is essential for protecting ourselves.

WNV primarily spreads through infected mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds. While many individuals show no symptoms and can survive without knowing they contracted it, others can face severe health issues like meningitis or encephalitis. This recent case therefore emphasises the urgency of awareness, particularly among young people and vulnerable groups.

The main culprits of the virus are mosquitoes and since they thrive in warm weather, persons in such countries must be on high alert and make active efforts to reduce mosquito populations to potentially lower the risk of contracting these types of vector borne viruses.

To protect yourself, start with insect repellent. Use EPA-approved products containing picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus, especially during early morning or evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Remember that clothing also matters, so opt for long sleeves and pants, preferably in light colours.

Eliminating unused water cans and various objects which hold standing water is also vital. Try to regularly check bird baths, flower pots and even clogged gutters to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Additionally, installing screens on windows or doors can keep these pests outside.

Vectors are dangerous so awareness and proactive measures are our best defenses. This rare case is just a stark reminder of the importance of prevention and by taking action, we can help protect ourselves and community from this serious threat.
