HBO releases trailer for eccentric comedy series ‘It’s Florida, Man’ [Watch]
Everyone knows that Florida is a crazy place where things happen that don’t happen anywhere else. HBO’s new late-night comedy series “It’s Florida, Man” celebrates that wackiness, telling ripped-from-the-headlines tales from the Sunshine State in a genre-defying way that’s something like a cross between true crime documentary and sketch comedy, or as someone says in the YouTube comments for the trailer released today, “Drunk History: Florida Man Edition.”
“As stories get wilder, more often than not, they’re not true,” says Carl Hiaasen, the novelist (“Bad Monkey”) and newspaper columnist who’s one of Florida’s foremost chroniclers. “But in Florida, they’re all true.”
The series hails from creator Mark Herwick and director Jeff Tomsic, who executive produce alongside “The Righteous Gemstones” EPs Danny McBride and Brandon James, with Bryan Storkel. The show features interviews from everyday Floridians about the stranger-than-fiction things that have happened to them. Their stories are told through “playful recreations starring a rotating cast of actors and comedians, including Anna Faris, Jake Johnson, Randall Park, Juliette Lewis, Sam Richardson, Ego Nwodim, and more,” per HBO. “This hilarious and outrageous series sheds light on the viral, wacky, and weird. Covering diverse topics – from mermaids to witches, extreme fantasies, and feral bunnies with equal parts humor and heart, ‘It’s Florida, Man’ is a love letter to the beaches, backwaters, and especially the people of a misunderstood yet magical state.”
The trailer release comes as Florida braces for the impact from Hurricane Milton while dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and Warner Bros. Discovery is pledging support to agencies providing on-the-ground support to people affected and has shared a link where viewers can donate.
“It’s Florida, Man” premieres Friday, October 18 at 11 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
