Asperitas Skies over Belgium
Photographer: Thierry LombrySummary Author: Thierry LombryThe altostratus undulatus asperitas clouds pictured above were captured on the evening of June 29, 2024, from Wépion, Belgium. I snapped this photo between two short periods of rain. These infrequently observed clouds were only visible for about 20 minutes before dissipating. Asperitas offer low contrast, but the tones and contrast shown here are as close to reality as possible. Only the horizon was locally yellowish due to sunlight scattering by raindrops.
Asperitas clouds are typically seen following strong storms and or gravitational (orographic) waves, but on this day no severe weather occurred, nor was the weather notable in any way.
Photo Details: Recorded with a compact Canon Powershot S120 camera; manual mode; white balance on clouds. Taken 6:40 p.m. local time.
