Cabinet approves Okypy restructuring bill
Cabinet on Wednesday approved a bill to amend the structure of health state service organisation Okypy.
The legislations will enable its board of directors to set internal regulations for the rights and fees associated with medical, nursing, or other services provided outside the health scheme Gesy.
After the cabinet meeting, Health Minister Michael Damianos said that the approval of the amendment would enable the organisation to manage the costs of provided services more flexibly and ensure its sustainability.
He further explained that Okypy will be able to invoice for services outside Gesy for those not entitled to benefits based on the actual cost of those services, rather than the lower rates previously applied.
“The decision taken today indicates our commitment to continue upgrading the health system in our country,” he said.
“Enhancing Okypy’s capabilities is important, and this bill is a step in the right direction.”
When asked for clarification, Damianos explained that individuals who visit public hospitals in the country without entitlement to Gesy will be charged a fair amount for any medical, nursing, or other services, including emergency care, instead of the significantly lower rates currently applied.
The bill has to go before the House for approval.
