The roadside police cam caught the Cookie Monster behind the wheel of an Audi hatchback tearing along at nearly 60mph.

Cops said the Sesame Street-loving driver – who has not been named – was deliberately trying to get snapped by the camera.

He was clocked doing nearly 60mph in a 50mph zone in Dortmund.

Police have not tracked down the driver – but have warned he will be fined £35 (40 euros) if they catch him.

Furious traffic cops have said the stunt took the biscuit and was in poor taste.

Cops have said the stunt could have been fatal – as wearing the costume, especially at speed, could have impaired the driver’s vision.

They warned the Cookie Monster gag could have “endangered human lives”.

Police spokesman Peter Bandermann said: “The fun of wearing a mask from the Muppet Show can quickly turn serious.

“It won’t help the relatives of a person who has been killed if the person who did it tearfully regrets their mask fun in court.”

The Audi is found to have been registered to a 57-year-old man from Hagen – but they are still searching for the driver.

Arndt Kempgens, a traffic expert lawyer, told Bild: “The owner usually has the right to refuse to give evidence.

“But if he admits to having worn the mask or names the driver, it can be more expensive.

“Violating the ban on wearing a mask while driving can be punished with an additional 60 euros (£50).”

Cookie Monster was created in 1969 for Sesame Street.

He was dreamed up by legendary puppeteer Jim Henson and performed by Yoda star Frank Oz.

He has been a mainstay of the beloved kids’ show ever since.

The blue, furry eating machine is best known for guzzling incredible amounts of choc-chip treats.

But over the years he has also encouraged children to eat more healthily rather than having a fully cookie-based diet.

It is unclear if the biscuit-mad muppet has ever been caught speeding before – or if he even has a driving licence.
