A fire broke out at a Novato landfill on Tuesday.

The incident was reported around 4 a.m. at the Redwood Landfill and Recycling Center at 8950 Redwood Highway.

The fire burned a compost pile, Novato fire Battalion Chief Jeff Whittet said. The fire affected 2,000 yards of the 5,000-yard site, according to the fire district.

Landfill employees and firefighters contained the flames. Smoke from the fire is expected to last several days.

No buildings were threatened or damaged, Whittet said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

SAN RAFAEL

Rollover crash
injuries motorist

A motorist was hurt after his car tumbled down an embankment on a narrow road.

Firefighters were called around 4:15 p.m. Monday to Embarcadero Way and Mission Avenue.

San Rafael fire Deputy Chief Robert Sinnott said that the vehicle rolled about 30 feet down the hill and came to rest on its roof. Firefighters extracted the driver from the vehicle. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, Sinnott said.

Police said that investigators believe the driver traveled too close to the edge of the road and slid off. Alcohol is not considered a factor, according to authorities.
