India women cricket team will have one eye of their net run-rate when they take on Sri Lanka women cricket team in match No. 12 of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (October 9). Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has been declared fit for this crucial match after suffering an injury in the second match against Pakistan women team last week.
Harmanpreet’s side need to bolster their net run-rate if they hope to remain in contention for the semifinal after losing their opening game to New Zealand by 52 runs. India bounced back to beat their arch-rivals Pakistan in the next but remain near the bottom of the table.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, were stunned by Pakistan women cricket team in their opening match by 31 runs and went down to defending champions Australia by six wicket. However, Chamari Athapaththu’s side are still the ACC Women’s Asia Cup 2024 champions – which they achieved with a win over India in the final.
Team India opener Smriti Mandhana said the team wasn’t focussing on NRR in their upcoming matches. “It (NRR) was playing in our minds last match against Pakistan. But the conditions are very different here in UAE and scoring quickly isn’t quite easy. The first priority is to win the match and it’s a balance between what is best for the team and what we can do in terms of NRR. I started off fine last game but I consumed dot balls later on, which was irritating for me,” Mandhana said on the eve of clash against Sri Lanka in a press conference.
“We can’t go out there thinking we are going to attack any opposition and cruise, conditions and outfield are difficult. The first priority is winning than thinking of NRR in these situations. The group is definitely tricky, but it’s just the start, we don’t want to think too much ahead. One day at a time,” she added.
