Niskayuna 2025 budget proposes property tax increase

0

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The town of Niskayuna is proposing an 11-cent increase to property taxes in the 2025 tentative budget. Town officials said the increase is due to the national landscape and existing budget-negative services.

The new rate of $2.84 per 1,000 assessed value comes as the town pays its debt. Additionally, the town said that part of the excess fund balance is needed to pay off the old bond debt in 2025.

The town identified critical shortfalls in yard waste pick-up expenses, which it is proposing to settle by changing the town code to reduce labor costs. Due to new residential construction, the town is looking to shift to a homestead tax base, heavier than a non-homestead tax base.

The Highway Department's budget proposes an increase of slightly over one percent. The department is also projected to exceed the town's fund balance policies, and the town plans to suggest using the fund balance for capital investments in equipment.

The budget also proposes closing the Blatnick Park transfer station in March as it serves 200 of 8,358 Niskayuna residents, amounting to a $19,000 loss in the last five years. Officials said the town will explore discount options for residents who need to find a new trash disposal option.

Some items the town is still working to address in the budget are adjustments for water and sewer services, specifically commercial water and sewer. The town will host its first budget workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 4:30 p.m.
