TIMELAPSE: Northern lights seen over Oregon Monday

0

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Another spectacular display of the aurora borealis was seen over the night skies of western Oregon and southwest Washington Monday night.

A much stronger than forecast northern light event lit up the skies of the Pacific Northwest Monday night. This surprise event shows just how unpredictable this astronomical event can be for earth's magnetic field.

The strong burst of plasma and magnetic energy from the sun is the cause of the nighttime display. That potential has been heightened as the sun's solar cycle remains near peak activity.

Tuesday night's potential is much less than what Oregon and Washington saw Monday night. The viewing line is expected to move north Tuesday evening. Part of northwest Washington still has a chance, but that fades Wednesday night.

Mostly cloudy skies will also make it difficult for many across the Pacific Northwest to see the northern lights Tuesday and likely Wednesday. Wednesday's potential is even more unlikely than Tuesday.

If you have images of Monday night's northern lights you can share your photos and videos them with the KOIN 6 Weather Team for a chance to see them on-air.

Stay with the KOIN 6 Weather Team as the chance for solar storms and northern light views remain through the end of the year. 0
