Surprise move

Many might have expected Devine to head back to the Championship in the summer on the back of his spell at Plymouth Argyle during the second half of the season.

However, Tottenham instead made the decision to send the attacking midfielder to Westerlo, where he joined fellow Spurs loanee Luka Vuskovic.

The decision has proven to be a smart one by the North London club, with the 20-year-old getting regular game time in the Jupiler Pro League.

Alfie Devine shines in new role

It has now been revealed by Football.London that Devine was used in a deep central midfield role in Westerlo’s 2-2 draw with Beerschot on Saturday.

The report states that the Spurs youngster operated as a six but was given the freedom to push up the pitch when his side had the ball.

He played all 90 minutes, reportedly put in three successful tackles, made one interception and won three aerial duels in the game.

Devine also made his presence felt in the final third of the pitch, making one key pass, completing one successful dribble and taking two shots on goal.

Vuskovic the star of the show

However, it was his fellow Spurs loanee, Vuskovic, who was the best player on the pitch, scoring both of Westerlo’s goals and helping his side salvage a point.

The 17-year-old was not only dominant at the back but also confidently strode forward with the ball on a number of occasions, spraying some impressive passes over the top to the wide players.

The Croat has already scored four times and provided an assist in 10 league games, which are outstanding numbers for a centre-back (Transfermarkt).
