Psychologist weighs in on violent youth
A Barbadian-Canadian psychologist has stated there must be early intervention as well as special classes with trained professionals for troubled adolescents in order to stem the flare-up of violence in schools.
Retired Government Industrial School psychologist Cephus Sealey was responding to recent suggestions made by former Democratic Labour Party president Dr Ronnie Yearwood in the wake of a recent slashing incident at Alexandra School in St Peter.
Since that incident, there have been several other instances of violence among schoolchildren, the most recent involving a student with a “sharp object” last Wednesday.
Yearwood attributed the growing trend of violence among young people to broader societal challenges and said a lack of opportunities, creative outlets and support systems for young people was at the heart of the issue. (RT)
