Golden Thread

Photographer: Joe LaCourSummary Author: Joe LaCour

In the salt marshes of Dungeness Washington, strange orange plants can be found scattered among the grasses. This parasitic plant (Cuscuta pacifica), a salt marsh dodder, is commonly known as Golden Thread. It's native to the western U.S. and Canada, thriving in wetland areas from British Columbia to Southern California.

The photo above was taken on July 1, 2024, at the end of Sequim Dungeness Way, looking North towards the San Juan Islands. The Dungeness Lighthouse can barely be detected in the distant background (center of image).

Photo Details: Leica M9 camera; 35 mm Summicron lens; ISO 320; f13; 1/180 seconds exposure; processed in DXO.
