UNAMA: Last year’s Herat earthquake victims still urgently need aid

0

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), marking the anniversary of the deadly earthquakes in Herat, emphasized that the affected individuals are still in need and that the country remains vulnerable to disasters.

On Monday, October 7, UNAMA published a message on its X account, stating that immediate additional support for the people of Afghanistan is urgently required.

UNAMA noted that while the United Nations and its partners have aided hundreds of thousands of earthquake victims, many still require assistance.

The deadly earthquake, which struck on October 7 last year with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, impacted several districts in Herat.

Reports indicate that the earthquake caused significant loss of life and financial damage, especially in the Zinda Jan district and other parts of the province.

According to UN statistics, approximately 1,500 people lost their lives, and over 2,600 others were injured as a result of the earthquakes.

Afghanistan’s vulnerability to natural disasters highlights the urgent need for sustained international support. As winter approaches, the ongoing challenges faced by those affected by the earthquake, coupled with the broader humanitarian crisis, demand immediate attention to prevent further suffering.
