Canada’s Leylah Fernandez snapped a four-match losing streak with a 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 12 seed Diana Shnaider of Russia in the opening round of the Wuhan Open on Monday.
Fernandez, the world No. 28, improved to 2-0 against Shanider after beating her this summer in Cincinnati.
That 6-1, 6-4 win over Shanider on Aug. 16 was Fernandez’s last triumph. She went on to lose to Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals before dropping first-round matches in Cleveland, the U.S. Open and the China Open.
Fernandez will next face the winner of a match between Czechia’s Karolina Muchova and Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima.
