A Tennessee nurse and his dog died trying to save a man from floods driven by Hurricane Helene
As hurricane-fueled floodwaters surged into Tennessee's Nolichucky River, Boone McCrary, his girlfriend and chocolate lab Moss headed out on his fishing boat to rescue a man from his collapsing home. But the boat capsized, and McCrary and Moss were swept downstream. The boat and the dog's body were found two days later. It took four days to find McCrary's body. His girlfriend was rescued. He was one of the 215 people killed by Hurricane Helene’s raging waters and falling trees across six states. The man he died trying to help was saved hours later and calls McCrary his “guardian angel.”
