Q) I have been in my current job working in the charity sector for two years, but I’ve started to feel overwhelmed and like work has taken over everything – no matter how much I do, it never seems to be enough and my to-do list keeps growing.

Although I feel that I’m doing something good by being in this industry, the daily grind is really getting me down.

I used to work in entertainment communications, and I know it sounds shallow, but I miss the glamorous side of meeting celebs and going to events.

However, I’ve been out of that industry too long to go back now. Help!

Gloria, via email.

A) Many people feel overwhelmed at times and question their career path, so you’re not alone.

While your work is meaningful, it’s OK to recognise when the daily grind is taking a toll.

One of the first things you can do is reach out for support.

Talk to your manager or find a mentor or coach who can offer advice on prioritising tasks, setting realistic goals and managing your workload more effectively.

They might offer insights that help you feel more supported and less isolated.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial, so set firm limits for yourself, like shutting down your laptop at a specific time each day.

It’s also OK to miss the glamorous aspects of your old job.

Your skills are still valuable, and gaining experience in another sector can be an advantage.

So consider chatting to former colleagues about the current landscape and potential roles – you never know what opportunities might arise.

Ultimately, it’s important to enjoy both your job and personal life, so keep pushing for that balance.
