Lockdown lifted at McKay High School after gun threat, student in custody
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – McKay High School in Salem underwent a temporary lockdown Friday morning after students reported that someone had made threatening statements and may have been in possession of a gun, according to officials.
Officers responded to the school as the lockdown was put into effect around 10:20 a.m., at which point students were barricaded in their classrooms as police investigated the threat, according to the school.
Police took one student into custody and the lockdown was lifted by 10:50 a.m. Officials say the student did not appear to have a firearm at the time.
In a letter to parents, Principal Ranae Quiring shared the following:
I know that when our school is placed in a lockdown, this is concerning for our families, students and staff. Please know that school safety is our most important priority, and we will always take every possible measure to keep everyone safe. I want to commend our students for doing the right thing by immediately reporting their concerns, and for how well our students and staff responded when implementing our safety procedures.
