UPDATE, 11 a.m.: Officials with the City of Scott gas department were able to secure the broken gas line, enabling the shelter in place to be lifted.

Repair crews are currently on scene making appropriate repairs. Officials are still asking residents to avoid the 200 block of Anna Street due to the heavy equipment and emergency response vehicles on scene.

ORIGINAL STORY: SCOTT, La. (KLFY) -- A gas leak in Scott has caused two schools and an assisted-living facility to shelter in place, authorities said.

Scott Middle School, Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School and Acadian Heritage Apartments have all been sheltered in place. The repairs are estimated to take three hours. Everyone is asked to avoid the area.

Lafayette Police's Hazmat Unit is on scene monitoring the air quality so that the shelter place can be lifted as soon as possible, according to Scott Police.

While conducting work, a private contractor severed an 4-inch gas line which feeds the entire City of Scott, authorities said.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
