Manhattan waterfall flowing again thanks to restoration project

NEW YORK (PIX11)—A Manhattan waterfall is flowing again after five years of inactivity.

Manhattan's Morningside Park hosted a gathering to celebrate the park's picturesque waterfall's reactivation. The waterfall has been out of service after breaking down more than five years ago.

A partnership between New York City's Parks Department and Columbia University made the restoration project possible.

Officials say that after the waterfall was down, the pond began to deteriorate as toxic algae developed, and local turtles were pushed out.

But the city and the school had a plan. Together, they persevered to resolve the waterfall's issues and make it function again. Now, the waterfall is flowing yet again.

There is still an issue with harmful algae blooming in the pond, but officials say that's the next problem they'll tackle. In the meantime, residents and visitors can enjoy the newly restored waterfall.
