TOPEKA (KSNT) - A man accused of seriously injuring a pedestrian in the Capital City last year during a hit-and-run incident received his sentence Friday.

Documents with the Shawnee County District Court show Marcus R. Mendoza was sentenced to one year of probation on Oct. 4. He pleaded no contest in July to an amended charge of failure to stop at an accident with his other charges being dropped.

Topeka police officers were called around 6:15 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2023 to the area of Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Central Park on reports of a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian. Police found a man at the scene suffering from life-threatening injuries who was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

The Topeka Police Department later said it arrested Mendoza in connection to the hit-and-run. He was initially charge with failure to stop at an accident and failure to exercise due care in regard to a pedestrian.
