Postecoglou takes no credit for Spurs star’s achievement after big announcement
Ange Postecoglou has reacted to Dominic Solanke’s inclusion in the England squad, suggesting that the striker had to take the hard route back to the top in his career.
Shrewd signing rather than expensive flop
When Tottenham spent a club-record fee to sign Solanke in the summer, many felt that the North London club had overpaid for the 26-year-old (talkSPORT).
Some might have feared that the Englishman might turn out to be Richarlison 2.0 but the newcomer has already silenced critics, having led the line brilliantly so far.
The former Cherries star has impressed with pressing and his link-up play while also finding the back of the net three times.
Postecoglou reacts to call-up
Solanke has been rewarded for his impressive start to the season with a call-up to the England set-up, with the Tottenham man joining Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins as one of three strikers in the squad.
It is just the second time he has got the call-up, with his first and only cap for the Three Lions coming all the way back in 2017.
Postecoglou pointed out that the centre-forward had to deal with rejection early in his career and fight his way back up to the top.
When asked if he was surprised by Solanke’s call-up, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “I don’t know about surprised, with Dom, he’s had to work awfully hard in his career. It’s important to all young players that the trajectory doesn’t always go in a linear fashion.
“He was at big clubs, didn’t get started but that didn’t deter him. He went to Bournemouth and did well. It’s all down to him. I’ve had him for a month, I’ve had zero to do with his call-up, it’s down to him.”
The chance of game time is slim
Solanke’s chances of winning his second England cap appear slim as Kane and Watkins are both ahead of him in the pecking order for now.
That is certainly not the worst thing for Tottenham as the centre-forward would come back fresh from the international break, with the Lilywhites having a London Derby against West Ham the following week.
