South Africa will look to seal the ODI series by gaining an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series when they take on Ireland in the second ODI at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday (October 4). The Proteas, who drew the two-match T20I series 1-1, started off the ODI series with a big 139-run win in the first ODI earlier this week.
South African batters Ryan Rickleton and Tristan Stubbs were stars of the first ODI win, with the former top-scoring with 91 and the latter notching up 79 as the Proteas posted 271 for 9 after batting first. In reply, the Irishmen were bundled out for just 132 with Lizaad Williams claiming 4/32 and Lungi Ngidi and Bjorn Fortuin picking up two wickets each.
“It is a good start to the series. It was a competitive score, we had to fight. Proper innings from Rickelton. The bowling was great. The conditions were in their favour. The pressure was on them,” South Africa ODI skipper Temba Bavuma said after the 1st ODI.
Opening batter Rickleton was the ‘Player of the Match’ said the SA batters needed to be watchful in the first innings. “When Tristan came in we were in a spot bother. We wanted to home in on our Test match skills. We score quite quickly so we knew we could catch up. It was just about getting out of that initial phase. The tail wagged nicely for us. Credit has to go to the tail. The runs at the end were invaluable,” Rickleton said.
SA have dominated the head-to-head clashes so far against the Irish, winning 7 out of the 9 matches between the two sides till date. A win on Friday night will seal another ODI series win for Bavuma.
