Lavrov accuses US of seeking control over Afghanistan peace process
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated during the Moscow Format meeting on Friday that the United States and its allies are trying to gain control over the resolution process of the Afghanistan crisis.
The sixth Moscow Format meeting on Afghanistan began on Friday, October 4. Representatives from several countries, including Russia, India, China, Iran, and Pakistan, participated.
Lavrov urged his allies to remain vigilant and warned that the U.S. intends to use the United Nations for this purpose.
Lavrov emphasized the need to be cautious of the U.S. and its allies’ attempts to involve themselves in these processes. They aim to dominate the situation, including using UN authority for their own objectives.
Lavrov acknowledged that Afghanistan still faces numerous problems and that Russia continuously works to address them. He explained that Russia developed the Moscow Format and other regional mechanisms to assist in resolving these challenges.
He further stressed that regional mechanisms, combining their efforts, are the most effective way to achieve significant results in resolving Afghanistan’s issues.
Lavrov also pointed out the ongoing presence of various terrorist groups in Afghanistan, which continue to launch attacks beyond its borders. He called for international support to help Afghanistan in its fight against terrorism.
The Russian Foreign Minister reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to pragmatic dialogue with Kabul, insisting that maintaining constructive engagement with Afghanistan’s partners is essential for the region’s security and economic development and for fostering national reconciliation.
Lavrov expressed support for the Taliban’s efforts to curb terrorist threats in the region, reiterating that Russia will continue its engagement with Afghanistan to ensure stability.
