Manchester United left-back Harry Amass regarded as not yet ready for the physicality of first-team football

Manchester United left-back Harry Amass is regarded as not yet ready for the physicality of first-team football, according to The Athletic.

The 17-year-old second-year scholar impressed on the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the United States, gaining traction with supporters.

Amass also displayed his technical ability when Man United’s under-21s played a 1-1 draw with their Hertha Berlin counterparts in the Premier League International Cup on Tuesday, with sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox present.

However, manager Erik ten Hag will continue to use the experienced players in his squad despite Man United’s difficulties at left-back as the step from youth football to the Premier League is huge.

Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw are currently unavailable due to injuries but are expected to be fit at the same time after the international break this month.

Diogo Dalot has featured in the position so far this term, but he has not impressed, allowing Brennan Johnson to run clear to tap in Micky van de Ven’s cross three minutes into their 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Portuguese also conceded a penalty in the 3-0 victory against Southampton, and Ten Hag will be desperate to see Shaw and Malacia return.

Defensive midfielder Toby Collyer featured at left-back against Barnsley, Lisandro Martinez has played there too this term, while Ten Hag has admitted that Jonny Evans could be an option if need be.

Shaw claimed back in June that people should watch out for Amass, but it could take a while before the teenage sensation is trusted with plenty of first-team minutes.

He has trained regularly with the senior side and has been on the bench a few times, but Ten Hag is not convinced he has what it takes to perform at the needed level right now.
