Julian Alvarez names Spurs star as one of the hardest opponents he has faced

Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez has named a Tottenham player as one of the hardest opponents he has gone up against in his career.

Tottenham’s defensive improvements

While there has been a lot said about Tottenham’s expansive and hyper-aggressive style of play and their ability to fashion chances, their defensive improvements have gone under the radar.

Not only have Spurs improved their set-piece defending but they have also had a lot more control of matches and have given away fewer chances than they did last season.

In fact, Tottenham have the joint second-best defensive record in the Premier League so far, having conceded just five goals in their six matches.

Central defenders have come to the party

While Micky van de Ven continues to be the headline act at the back for Spurs, given his eye-catching pace, his centre-back partner, Romero, is silently going about his business.

Not only does the Argentine hardly give attackers any breathing space but he is also instrumental in the way Spurs play out from the back, being an exceptional passer.

His international teammate, Julian Alvarez, has now named Romero as the second hardest opponent he has come up against after Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham’s defenders have a harder job

Tottenham undoubtedly have one of the best centre-back pairings in the world and one can argue that Romero and Van de Ven have the hardest jobs in the league.

Given the way Postecoglou’s men play, the pair are often left exposed at the back and need to defend one-on-one on several occasions in each game.

It is thus pivotal that Romero and Van de Ven remain fit through the season as Radu Dragusin does not appear to be quite as comfortable playing in such a high line.
