Sports Briefs: Kudla, Smith highlight singles winners in Round of 16 at Tiburon Challenger

Wild card Colton Smith surged past Remy Bertola 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the Round of 16 at the Tiburon Challenger on Wednesday at the Tiburon Peninsula Club. In other men’s singles action, eighth-seeded Denis Kudla beat Gonzalo Oliveira 7-5, 6-3, 6-2. Other winners were England’s Jack Pinnington Jones and Brazil’s Karue Sell.

In doubles action during the Round of 16, top-seeded Americans Mac Kiger and Patrik Trhac won 6-3, 7-6 (11) over Brandon Holt and Nicolas Mejia. In an all-American matchup, third-ranked Trey Hilderbrand and Alex Lawson beat wild cards Nicholas Godsick and Ethan Quinn 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Second-seeded Luke Saville and Tristan Schoolkate beat Calum Putterrgill and Dane Sweeny 6-4, 6-3 in a matchup of Australians.

Kody Pearson and Joshua Sheehy upset fourth-seeded Marcus Daniell and Hans Hach Verdugo 6-3, 6-4. Wild cards Theodore Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck held off Christian Langmo and Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-4. Gonzalo Oliveira and Kelsey Stevenson beat Gabriel Roveri Sidney and Tennyson Whiting 6-3, 6-4.

Americans Robert Cash and JJ Tracy rallied for a 6-7 (3), 6-5, 11-9 win over Andres Andrade and Abdullah Shelbayh.

Girls volleyball

Josie Campo and Leah Mathewson both had double doubles as Terra Linda took care of Sonoma Valley on Tuesday, 25-9, 25-20, 23-25, 25-13.
Campo had a team-high 17 kills, adding 16 digs and four aces. Mathewson had 21 assists, 13 kills and a pair of blocks. Liza Reed added a team-high 21 digs and six kills for TL (19-8).

• Branson (15-5, 5-0) maintained its perfect league record following a 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 win over Archie Williams (2-15, 2-3) on Tuesday. Branson’s next game is a crucial MCAL battle at Redwood on Oct. 9.

Girls tennis

Carly Amborn picked up San Domenico’s only singles win during Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to Lick-Wilmerding at San Francisco City College. Amborn won her match 6-1, 7-5.

Golf

Redwood High’s girls squad remains undefeated after Monday’s victory over Terra Linda at Meadow Club. Katherine Lim was the low medalist for the Giants (12-0) with a 37. Redwood’s Senior Day shone the spotlight on Taylor Bridges (38), Chloe Branson (40), Katelyn Van Dusen (42) and Ainsley Gallagher (43).

Mia Schlotman led the Trojans with a 45.

• Marin Academy beat Bay, 193-213 at the par 36 Presidio course behind a low 42 from Sterling Colpitts. Genevieve Zeches and Kelly Lundgren both shot 49 for the Wildcats (7-2 BCL).
• Registration is open for the 2025 San Francisco City Championship, hosted by TPC Harding Park and Lincoln Park. • Dr. Kevin Kobalter of San Rafael aced the 11th hole at Poppy Hills using a 7 iron on September 30.

Field hockey

Senior Stella King registered a goal and an assists, and juniors Sarah Cormier, Ali Jampol and Emi Navesi each netted a goal as Tam beat Berkeley 4-1 on Monday.

Girls water polo

Archie Williams notched an 11-6 victory over Terra Linda on Tuesday to strengthen the Peregrine Falcons’ position atop the MCAL standings. The Falcons (4-0 league, 10-3 overall) are ranked 22nd nationally and 15th in the state.

Junior Alina Noyes led the Trojans (3-1 league, 7-5 overall) with a pair of goals, while Elizabeth Berringer, Emily Erickson, Jessa Dunn and. Rory Kearns each added a goal. Terra Linda goalkeeper Haley Brown had 11 saves.

• San Marin pushed out to a big lead early in Monday’s 19-9 victory over crosstown rival Novato.

Boys water polo

Novato suffered a heartbreaking 16-15 loss in triple-overtime against host Newark Memorial on Tuesday. The Hornets (2-2 league, 4-11 overall) were coming off Monday’s 17-10 win over rival San Marin. Novato senior goalkeeper Jack Alvarado had five saves as the Hornets earned their second win of the season over the Mustangs.

• Archie Williams stretched its winning streak to seven games as the Peregrine Falcons beat Terra Linda, 15-10, on Tuesday. Archie Williams (4-0, 11-1) are ranked fourth in the north Coast Section, behind No. 2 Redwood and No. 3 Miramonte. Terra Linda (2-1, 5-4) is ranked 15th in NCS.

Hall of Fame

The Redwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for athletes, coaches, special recognition, and team categories. Athletes must have graduated in 2010 or before and participated in any sports activity while at Redwood.
