Apple TV+ renews Colin Farrell’s enigmatic drama ‘Sugar’ for Season 2
Are you ready for more alien noir? On Wednesday, Apple TV+ announced a Season 2 renewal for “Sugar,” its Emmy-nominated, genre-bending sci-fi mystery starring Colin Farrell, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The series premiered in April of this year to modestly positive reviews, but gained attention for its wild midseason twist, which reveals that Farrell’s character, a peculiar, classic cinema-loving Los Angeles private detective named John Sugar, is — spoiler alert — an alien sent to Earth to study humans. He’s hired to find a missing girl, and he gets too close to the case, and in turn gets too close to human beings.
Season 2 will find Sugar investigating a new missing person case while continuing to search for clues about his missing sister. Season 1 cast members who could potentially return for Season 2 include Kirby, Amy Ryan, and Jason Butler Harner, but the Season 2 cast has not been confirmed aside from Ferrell.
The series was created by Mark Protosevich, who will not return for Season 2, and is executive produced by Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, Farrell, and showrunner Sam Catlin (“Preacher”).
“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace ‘Sugar,’ and we are thrilled to return for a second season,” executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg said in a statement to THR. “We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”
“Sugar” earned one nomination at the 76th Emmy Awards, Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour) for Richard Rutkowski.
Farrell can currently be seen in the hit HBO limited series “The Penguin.”
