‘Only ‘third-rate’ girls marry farmers’ sons…’: Maharashtra MLA’s ‘categorization’ of women triggers row | WATCH

0

Maharashtra MLA Devendra Bhuyar has sparked a controversy with his remarks in which he “categorised” women based on their “beauty”, and stated that only “third-rate” girls marry sons of farmers while the more good-looking girls choose to marry men who have a steady job and a stable source of income.

Addressing a gathering on Tuesday, Bhuyar, an independent MLA from Warud-Morshi and a supporter deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, claimed that a farmer’s son has to settle for an “inferior” looking bride as good-looking or “first-rate” women, as he termed them, would not give a second thought to a man who is not financially stable and lacks a steady income.

“If a girl is beautiful, the ‘first-rate’ girls, she will not like a person like you and me, but she will opt for a person having a job (while choosing her husband),” the MLA from Amravati district claimed in his speech in Warud tehsil while highlighting the woes of the farmers.

Continuing his crude categorization and generalization of women based on their looks, Bhuyar went on to claim, “girls who are at number two,  that is, who are somewhat less good-looking, prefer someone who runs a grocery shop or paan kiosk”.

“A number three girl would like (to marry) the son of a farmer,” he added while claiming that only girls who are “at the bottom of the lot” prefer to marry a boy belonging to farming family.

The lawmaker from Warud-Morshi also claimed that children born out of such a wedlock also lack good looks and the cycle continues.

Meanwhile, Bhuyar’s comments have triggered a controversy with opposition leaders castigating for his offensive remarks against women and farmers.

“No one will tolerate such categorisation of women. Society will teach you a lesson,” said Congress leader and former Maharashtra women and child development minister Yashomati Thakur said while reacting to Bhuyar’s remarks.

“Ajit Pawar and those in power should keep their MLAs under control,” Thakur added.

Devendra Bhuyar has not issued a response to his comments yet.
