Woman spat on, shot passenger on Red Line train on North Side, police say
A woman was in custody after allegedly shooting a man on a CTA Red Line train Wednesday morning on the North Side.
About 8:45 a.m., the 33-year-old victim was on a northbound Red Line train between the Bryn Mawr and Thorndale stations when a woman approached and spat on him, authorities said.
The two began arguing when the 23-year-old woman took out a gun and fired once, striking the man in his left shoulder, Chicago police said.
Though fire officials listed the man's condition as critical, police said his condition was upgraded to fair at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
A statement from the CTA said it received a report of a disturbance aboard a northbound Red Line train about 8:46 a.m.
Earlier, the CTA said the shooting happened as the train was pulling away from the Argyle stop.
As of 10 a.m., normal operations had resumed, the CTA said.
By midmorning the Thorndale station, along a stretch of mostly small businesses, including dry cleaners and restaurants, was quiet. Trains were running and making stops at the station, though few riders waited at the stop. A handful of officers were still hanging around the area.
Earlier, shuttle buses were provided between the Howard and Belmont stations.
