Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz faced off in the first, and possibly only, vice presidential debate on Tuesday night. Also, Iran fired missiles into Israel on Tuesday. These stories, and more, are in your five things to know this Wednesday.

1. 5 takeaways from the Vance-Walz VP debate

The two candidates clashed on a range of issues, from abortion to immigration to foreign policy. But the forum was notably more civil and policy-focused than the debate between Vice President Harris and former President Trump that took place last month.

2. Iran fires missiles into Israel further escalating tensions

Iran fired nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel Tuesday, but President Joe Biden said at his direction, the U.S. military helped thwart the attack.

4. 21 arrested in major Capital Region drug trafficking bust

The New York Attorney General’s Office reported the arrest of 21 people following a substantial drug trafficking investigation in the Capital Region. Nearly 10 pounds of cocaine valued at around $450,000 were recovered during the investigation, in addition to quantities of fentanyl and heroin.

5. Fulton County cold case: Johnstown mom still missing after 16 years

This past Monday marked 16 years since a Johnstown mother, Kellisue Ackernecht, went missing after work. With little evidence other than Kellisue’s husband’s puzzling burning car, police said the night remains a mystery.
