Tottenham post unbelievable xG record that should embarass Man United
Tottenham Hotspur broke an xG (expected goals) record this week during their 3-0 win over Manchester United.
The scoreline flattered Man Utd
On another day, Tottenham could have quite easily put six or seven past a hapless United side, with the home side let off by some poor finishing from the Lilywhites.
Timo Werner failed to beat Andre Onana in two separate one-vs-one situations and James Maddison’s chip was also well saved by the United number one, while Brennan Johnson hit the post.
Tottenham continued to create many chances after the home side went down to ten men and the xG that Ange Postecoglou’s men accumulated does not make for good reading for the Red Devils.
xG record breakers
Spurs registered an xG of 4.67 at Old Trafford, which according to Opta, is the most that the North London club have ever accumulated in a single Premier League game since they began recording the stat.
Even more unbelievably, according to xG Philosophy, Tottenham’s xG is more than Manchester United have accumulated across all their games at Old Trafford this season.
That is astonishing considering that Erik Ten Hag’s men have played five games across all competitions at the stadium this season compared to Spurs’ one.
Stat points to Spurs weakness
Tottenham’s high xG once again points to the fact that their finishing was not up to the expected level, which is an issue which has plagued Postecoglou’s men right from the start of the season.
However, the Spurs boss will feel that his side might have capitalised on their chances and scored a couple of more had Heung-min Son been fit enough to start over Werner.
