Sandro admits Spurs squad was shocked and upset when former manager was sacked

Tottenham Hotspur fans have seen many great managers come and go over the years. The departure of some have left a more profound impact on the club than others, but former midfielder Sandro explains why one of his ex-bosses being sacked really hurt.

Andre Villas-Boas was beloved by the players

There was much scepticism when Tottenham decided to appoint former Chelsea boss, Andre Villas-Boas as their new manager in 2012.

The Portuguese coach had spent a year with the Blues before losing his job, and spent another year at Spurs before suffering the same fate.

While his dismissal barely caused a stir among the fanbase, it certainly impacted the players at the club, who became rather attached to their manager at the time.

Speaking to OnlineCassino, Sandro discussed the feeling around the dressing room when Andre Villas-Boas was removed from his position, and revealed Kyle Walker took the news particularly hard.

He said: “We were very shocked when Andre Villas-Boas was sacked, but I didn’t see anyone crying. We were shocked and emotional because we all got on so well with him, it was a difficult moment for the team because sometimes players don’t agree with that decision.

“I didn’t cry, maybe Kyle Walker cried, but it was emotional because we had a good relationship with Andre.”

Kyle Walker confirms tears were shed

Sandro may not be sure, but Kyle Walker himself has admitted on his podcast that he and other players in the Spurs squad were visibly upset. The Manchester City star even revealed at least ten members of the team were crying when they heard the news that Villas-Boas had been sacked.

Apparently, Walker and Michael Dawson were in tears among others, due to the special relationship Villas-Boas had forged between the players.

A good start spoiled by Bale sale

Villas-Boas made an encouraging start to life at Spurs, and his first season was a relative success for sure. However, the club sold Gareth Bale at the start of his second season, spent that money poorly, and he was never going to succeed from there.

Still, at least we got Pochettino after that to help fix the mess caused by that transfer, so all clouds have a silver lining. One thing’s for sure, when Ange Postecoglou leaves, I think a lot of our players will be heartbroken in a similar manner described by Walker here.
