Patriots Fans Couldn’t Shake Mac Jones Flashbacks After Awful Loss

The future behind center might be bright for the Patriots. Drake Maye certainly has all the skills you want in a franchise quarterback.

But New England currently is receiving next to nothing from its signal-caller, which is a trend the fanbase has grown accustomed to since Tom Brady left town.

Jacoby Brissett only was responsible for one turnover across the Patriots' first four games, but solid ball security was about the only positive the veteran QB offered over that span. He failed to throw over 170 yards in any of those contests, only threw two touchdown passes and didn't inspire any confidence in a unit that's among the NFL's worst.

Those lowlights sparked flashbacks for New England fans, who couldn't help but dwell on the Mac Jones era after the Patriots' third straight loss Sunday.

Jerod Mayo on Monday expressed a commitment to Brissett, even though the 31-year-old's play had diminished with each passing week. Perhaps the conviction was a means of protection for Maye, as very few QBs -- if any -- could thrive with the offensive line and supporting cast New England currently features.

Brissett might be enough to lead the Patriots to a win this Sunday, though. The visiting Miami Dolphins are dealing with their own quarterback nightmare while Tua Tagovailoa remains sidelined.
