County Champs 2024

The top players in Cornwall took part in this year’s tournament to find the County Champions at Cornwall College’s sports hall in Pool at the weekend. Day one began with the men’s and women’s singles, and there were several sets of brothers and cousins battling it out in the men’s - the Hill family, the Dyers and the Brazewells, amongst the other men.

The two top seeds, Harry and Jack Dyer, made it through to the final and played a close match of speed and amazing reflexes before Jack beat his brother in two exciting ends.

In the women’s event, Joanna Vyvyan came out a deserved winner over Hope Warner, with her consistent play and athletic court coverage.

The next day was another busy one, with the mixed and men’s doubles and two plate events, so things kicked off with the mixed and some close games involving young, up and coming players and the more experienced pairs. There was a close semi-final involving James Whetter and Vicki Meade taking Jack Dyer and Joanna Vyvyan to three ends, but the second seeds Jack and Joanna won to progress to the final, where they were no match for top seeds Elliot Dyer and Hope Warner who won in two ends.

In the men’s quarter finals, there were two close three-ender games involving Frank Adams and his partner Alec Netley-Reseigh beating Tony Wong and Chen Yu Zhao, plus Lee Chappel and Ben Tredinnick winning against Dominic and James Hill, but the top two seeds eventually progressed to the final.

The men’s final

The final was also an exciting match, as James Whetter and Guy Michell, the evergreen St Austell pair, took Harry and Jack Dyer to three tight ends of skilful, fast badminton with the Dyer brothers outlasting their opponents to take the title, and finish an excellent weekend’s badminton.   Congratulations to the three Dyers, Jack, Elliot and Harry, who between them won 3 out of the 5 Championship events. Winners of all 5 events can play in Badminton England’s prestigious Champion of Champions event at BE’s Milton Keynes headquarters in May next year.
