Diamond Beach, Iceland

Photographer: Egidio VerganiSummary Author: Egidio Vergani

Shown above is Diamond Beach (Fellsfjara) in southeastern Iceland, one of the most evocative natural spectacles on the island. Its name is derived from the large quantity of icebergs of various sizes that are scattered all over the beach. Powerful ocean waves push the bergs onto the black sandy beach, which when lit by Iceland's limited winter season sunshine resemble sparkling diamonds. The color of the ice ranges from white (nearly clear) to turquoise -- the bluish color being largely a function of the ice's density and thickness.
