Cavs finalize training camp roster
The Cavaliers training camp roster is official heading into the start of camp on Tuesday.
Basketball season is quickly approaching. The Cleveland Cavaliers begin training camp on Tuesday. Preseason games start next week with their exhibition against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday, October 8. As such, the team has officially announced the roster they will take into camp.
The roster can be broken up into three parts: Players currently under contract, players on two-way deals, and training camp invitees on Exhibit 10 contracts.
Players currently under contract
- Darius Garland
- Donovan Mitchell
- Jarrett Allen
- Caris LeVert
- Max Strus
- Evan Mobley
- Isaac Okoro
- Georges Niang
- Dean Wade
- Jaylon Tyson
- Ty Jerome
- Sam Merrill
- Tristan Thompson
- Craig Porter, Jr.
Players on two-way contracts
- Emoni Bates
- Luke Travers
- JT Thor
Training camp invites
- Zhaire Smith
- Pete Nance
- Jacob Gilyard
- Jules Bernard
The Cavs will enter camp with one open roster spot. This will likely remain available going into the season. The front office has historically opted to keep a position unfilled through the trade deadline to maintain flexibility in trades or in the buyout market.
A training camp invite could potentially take away a two-way contract from one of the players currently on those deals. We saw that two seasons ago as Mamadi Diakite did enough in training camp and the preseason to earn one of those deals. The Cavs waived RJ Nembhard to make that happen.
That probably won’t happen this season. The Cavaliers are committed to the development of Bates and Travers. There’s an outside chance that someone could take Thor’s place, but that seems unlikely as Thor can fill a position of need with the team with room for upside.
Training camp begins for the Cavs on October 1 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
