Indian captain Rohit Sharma came out to bat in the first innings of the 2nd Test vs Bangladesh at the Green Park in Kanpur on Monday in ‘beast mode’. After dismissing Bangladesh for 233 on Day 4 of the rain-hit 2nd Test, Indians raced to 50 runs in the first three overs of their reply.

Rohit equalled a world record in Test cricket, becoming just the 4th batter in the 147 years of Tests to smash his first two balls he faced in Test match for sixes. The other batters are Foffie Williams of West Indies and India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Umesh Yadav.

The Indian captain smashed Khaled Mahmud for two massive sixes in the first over by Bangladesh pacer Khaled Mahmud – the second over of the innings. Tendulkar achieved this feat against Australia in a Test match in 2015 while pacer Umesh Yadav did this against South Africa in a Test match in 2019.

Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal brought up India’s fifty in 3 overs – the fastest ever in Test cricket. The previous best was England’s record in 4.2 overs vs West Indies in a Test match earlier this year.

After Rohit Sharma’s onslaught in the second over, the captain smashed Hasan Mahmud for his third six off the innings while Jaiswal joined into the fun – smashing his first six in the same over. The Rajasthan Royals opener ended the third over with two successive fours as India brought up their record-fastest team 50.

Jaiswal had earlier smashed Hasan Mahmud for three successive fours in his first over to make his intent clear. He brought up his 50 in just 31 balls with 10 fours and 1 six to his name in just the 9th over of the innings.

The Indian skipper was dismissed for 23 off 11 balls with Bangladesh off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz finding his way through his defences, but not before 55 runs had come in 3.5 overs.

Thanks to Jaiswal’s fifty, India also brought up the fastest-ever 100 runs in Tests – in 10.1 overs. India held the previous record of scoring 100 in 12.2 overs vs West Indies in 2023.
