22-Degree Halo and the Statue of Pencils
Photographer: Marco MenieroSummary Author: Marco Meniero
The 22-degree halo featured above was captured next to the "Statue of the Pencils" located in front of the Theater of Imperior Traiano in Civitavecchia (seaport of Rome). These halos form when tiny 6-sided (pencil-shaped) ice crystals, composing cirrus clouds or free falling through the atmosphere, refract sunlight. Note that this halo is actually circular but appears oval because the wide-angle lens of my smartphone acted to distort the frame. Photo taken on June 4, 2024, 12:40 a.m. local time.
