Ange Postecoglou reveals how he feels about criticism and Spurs doubters
The tide of popular opinion has been turning on Ange Postecoglou of late, with many pundits beginning to doubt his methods. However, the Spurs boss doesn’t seem to mind if people question him – and the 3-0 win over Manchester United was seemingly an answer in itself.
Ange Postecoglou will not change his approach
The free-flowing, attacking football Postecoglou prefers has entertained Spurs fans over the last 15 months. But, results haven’t always been what we had hoped, and some have suggested the tactics are making the team vulnerable.
Postecoglou has been very clear about the fact he won’t change his style and will stick to his principles; a mentality some pundits believe is naive and too stubborn to work.
Speaking to Sky Sports, though, Postecoglou explained why he has to stick to his guns: “Everyone’s allowed to have an opinion and a view on what I’m doing, but it doesn’t affect me, it really doesn’t. And that’s not because I’m dismissive of people’s views; it’s because this is what I believe in.
“This is why I’m here… I’m not here because I listened to other people. I’ve had plenty of opinions along the way, telling me to change the way I do things, and I’ve stayed with what I believe in, and that’s what I’ll do here. If I fail it won’t be because I’ve changed my approach or what I believe in.”
People should respect Postecoglou’s achievements
As well as questioning his methods, Postecoglou has also had to deal with pundits and fans playing down his past achievements in Scotland and Japan.
There are those who claim the step up to the Premier League has been and will be too much for Postecoglou, but he chooses to ignore those who don’t appreciate his previous success.
He added: “I just don’t think about it in those terms [people dismissing his past achievements]. If people acknowledge it or choose to be dismissive of it, because they feel it’s some sort of inferior level, you just have to accept that’s how people feel. It’s not what’s important to me.
“What’s important to me, deep in my soul, is that I make an impact wherever I am. That’s what I’ve done in my career so far and that’s what I plan to do here, and I’ll do it my way.”
Pundits like to be reactionary
It is simply the nature of the game for pundits, fans, and anyone involved in football to shout out knee-jerk reactions these days. There is so much noise out there that people have to make huge claims or be contrarian just to cut through, and that’s all that’s happening with Postecoglou right now.
The majority of the fanbase, the manager, the players, and I would hope the owners, are all really happy with how things are going, and that’s all that matters.
