Postecoglou argues Spurs have made ‘significant’ progress and spent well this year
It has now been just over 15 months since Ange Postecoglou took over at Tottenham, and despite what the critics may say, the Spurs boss firmly believes there are signs of real progress at the club.
Performances don’t match the results
After a blistering start to his time at Spurs last season, where the team went unbeaten for ten matches, the footballing world showered Postecoglou and his team with praise.
But, with injuries hitting the squad hard, the Lilywhites ended up fifth in the Premier League — a significant improvement on the eighth-placed finish the year before, but a disappointment given the strong start.
This term, Spurs have been up and down, and a couple of results in particular have frustrated fans: The defeats against Newcastle and Arsenal were always going to upset people.
However, Postecoglou is looking at the positives in the performances his team have put in, and insists things are moving in the right direction. If the result against Man United is anything to go by, he may just be right.
He told Sky Sports: “It’s a funny one. I really think we’ve played well in the league in all games, but obviously the results haven’t reflected that. So that always skews the way you feel about it. But they were challenging games for us.
“But I thought we played well, and probably had an opportunity to win all of them.”
Looking back at the last 15 months
Discussing those positive steps and the signs of success he has seen within the squad during his tenure, Postecoglou mentioned the style of play he has incorporated and the players he has acquired.
He added: “I really believe we’ve made progress in [the last 15 months]. I guess whatever measure you want; results-wise, we went from eighth to fifth, and we’ll see where we finish this year. It’s still early days.
“I think we’ve spent money really well, and every player we’ve brought in has already contributed and will do significantly. Whether you like it or not, we’ve definitely changed the way the team plays.
“I think there’s progress, but whether people think there should have been bigger progress I don’t know, but from where I sit we’ve made some significant steps forward. But there’s still plenty to do.”
People need to be patient
It’s crazy how impatient the world of football is these days. Everybody wants and expects things to change and to work instantly, but life doesn’t work that way. We are not even a year-and-a-half into Postecoglou’s project, and I really don’t know what more people could want right now.
We’ve got a manager who is happy, has got the team playing good football, results are generally good, and the whole club appears to be driven towards finally bringing success once more. Give it time, it’s coming. And if it doesn’t, it won’t be for the want of trying.
