Did Patriots Consider Playing Drake Maye Late In Blowout Loss Vs. 49ers?

The Patriots' blowout loss to the 49ers spotlighted the offense's disarray. Three turnovers, including a fumble and a pick-six, helped San Francisco take a 13-point lead over New England by the end of the first quarter.

Jacoby Brissett was sacked six times for a loss of 25 yards, including being stripped on the Patriots' final drive of the game by Nick Bosa, who recovered the fumble for the 49ers. Brissett finished the game with 168 yards on 19 completions with one touchdown and one interception.

With the Patriots trailing by 14 points in the fourth quarter, Jerod Mayo shut down the notion of putting rookie quarterback Drake Maye in for Brissett.

"No thoughts there," Mayo told reporters in his postgame press conference.

As the Patriots head into Week 5 in desperate need of something to change offensively, Mayo doubled down on the most important position of the team.

"At this point, Jacoby is our starting quarterback," Mayo said. "I haven't watched the film or anything like that. He's been a great leader. He just broke down the huddle after I talked to the guys. We have to watch the film. We have a long flight to go back and watch the film and we're always evaluating every single position."

Not everyone believes the Patriots playing Maye over Brissett would be the answer, given how bad the offensive line has been since the beginning of the season. It will be interesting to see how long Brissett can handle getting hit before he suffers an injury that could knock him out of a game or the season.
