Patriots’ Top Performers Vs. 49ers Confirm Troubling Trend

The third phase of the game was the best phase of the game when the New England Patriots faced the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium on Sunday.

New England's offense couldn't do much of anything through the air and its defense failed to set the edge as Niners quarterback Brock Purdy extended plays all afternoon. Special teams, however, was an area of strength for the Patriots in their 30-13 loss.

During the latest episode of NESN's "Foxboro Rush" podcast, George Balekji and Sean McGuire included three special teamers -- kicker Joey Slye, punter Bryce Baringer and depth linebacker Christian Elliss -- in their studs and duds. The fact the special teams were so well-represented, however, speaks volumes in all the wrong ways.

"Much like we said last week when we talked about Bryce Baringer, if we're starting out with studs and duds and labeling the special teams guys, you're in a tough spot," McGuire told Balekji. "But that's the way it goes."

Balekji added: "Let's go glass half full: They found consistency and reliability at the kicker and punter position. Winning teams need that. Don't take it for granted."

Unfortunately for the Patriots, core special teamers aren't usually the difference in the win column.
