Hezbollah: Hassan Nasrallah killed in Israeli attack

0

The Lebanese Hezbollah group confirmed in a statement that its Secretary General, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in yesterday’s Israeli military attack on the Dahiya region in southern Beirut.

The statement also confirmed the deaths of other senior Hezbollah members in the same attack, though it did not mention the names of the individuals.

It is worth noting that a few hours earlier, the Israeli army had released a statement announcing the death of Nasrallah, the Secretary General of Hezbollah.

Hezbollah’s confirmation of Hassan Nasrallah’s death comes after the group had previously informed Reuters, AFP, and local media in Lebanon and Iran that their leader was “alive and well.”

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, born on August 31, 1960, in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, joined the Shiite movement “Amal” during his teenage years, coinciding with the outbreak of Lebanon’s civil war. After studying in religious centers in Iraq and Iran, he returned to Lebanon and joined Hezbollah, which Abbas Mousavi led then.

Following the assassination of Abbas Mousavi by Israel in 1992, Hassan Nasrallah was elected as Hezbollah’s Secretary General. Under his leadership, Hezbollah played a pivotal role in ending Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon in 2000. Nasrallah gained significant fame and popularity across the Arab world due to his staunch opposition to Israel.

In 2006, Hezbollah engaged in the 33-day war against Israel, with Nasrallah emerging as a prominent leader of the resistance against Israel. He also played an active role in prisoner exchange negotiations with Israel.

Between 2004 and 2011, Nasrallah survived at least four assassination attempts, eventually requiring a security team of 150 members for his protection. Throughout these years, out of fear of being killed, he avoided public appearances, and most of his speeches were broadcast to his supporters via video.

Hassan Nasrallah was the third Secretary General of Hezbollah, following Sobhi al-Tufayli and Abbas Mousavi, and was one of the most loyal proxy commanders of the Islamic Republic of Iran under Ali Khamenei.

Nasrallah often praised Iran’s Supreme Leader, describing him as a “great and exceptional figure.” In one of his interviews, he highlighted Khamenei’s “accurate predictions,” stating, “In a meeting in 1999, he emphasized that your victory in Lebanon is very near, closer than you can even imagine.”

In one of his most famous speeches to the people of Iran and the world, Nasrallah declared, “I say this openly to the world: the budget, expenses, food, weapons, and missiles of Hezbollah come from the Islamic Republic of Iran, and no sanctions will affect this process.”

He further stressed, “As long as Iran has money, we have money.” This speech coincided with the popular protests in Iran, where people chanted slogans like “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life is for Iran,” expressing their discontent.

Hassan Nasrallah’s leadership of Hezbollah marked an era of significant resistance against Israeli occupation, earning him widespread recognition in the Arab world. As the situation continues to unfold, the impact of Nasrallah’s death on regional dynamics and Hezbollah’s future remains uncertain.
