Shigeru Ishiba elected as Japan’s new Prime Minister

Shigeru Ishiba, Japan’s former defense minister, has been elected as the country’s new prime minister.

At 67, Ishiba was elected in his fifth attempt to lead the Liberal Democratic Party, securing 215 out of 414 votes from party lawmakers on Friday, September 27. His opponent, Sanae Takaichi, received 194 votes.

Upon receiving the most votes, Ishiba stated that his goals included cleaning up the ruling party, rebuilding the economy, and addressing security threats from Japan’s powerful neighbours.

He made these remarks following his victory after five attempts to lead the Liberal Democratic Party.

Fumio Kishida’s cabinet is expected to resign next Thursday, and Ishiba will form his new cabinet once he is officially confirmed by Japan’s parliament.

Fumio Kishida stepped down after completing his three-year term following a financial scandal. Ishiba now faces the challenge of regaining public trust and ensuring political stability as Japan navigates a complex regional landscape.

Additionally, his leadership will be closely watched to see how he manages Japan’s economic recovery and foreign policy amidst ongoing global uncertainties.
