Francisco Alvarez departed the Mets’ game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night with an apparent back injury.
The 22-year-old catcher reached base on a walk in the top of the seventh inning and later moved up to second on a wild pitch. He successfully advanced to third base on a Tyrone Taylor ground ball to the left side of the infield, but he seemed to tweak his back and remained down on the field for an extended period of time after completing his slide.
Alvarez needed assistance leaving the playing surface and walking down the stairs into the dugout. Luis Torrens took his place both on the bases and behind the plate.
The Mets will likely provide an update on his status in short order. New York currently trails 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
