What to watch this weekend September 27, 2024: TV awards contenders

Paging elder millennial women everywhere! Joshua Jackson, the beloved actor formerly known as Charlie Conway and Pacey Witter, fronts this sexy new medical drama from executive producer Ryan Murphy. Set aboard a luxury ocean liner, the ABC procedural — the first episode of which is now streaming on Hulu — follows Jackson’s Dr. Max Bankman as he saves lives and deftly handles various medical cases on the high seas with the help of his small but mighty crew, portrayed by Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale. Elsewhere, Don Johnson stars as the ship’s captain (and looks good doing it). Each week is a new cruise, with a different theme, which keeps things exciting and fresh. All of this to say: Network TV is back, baby, and “Doctor Odyssey” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

However, the fall TV season is now fully underway, so other contenders include:

• “Colin From Accounts”: You might not yet have heard of this Australian import that just returned for its second season on Paramount+, but we’ll fix that now. A warm and funny romantic comedy, the series stars co-creators and real-life spouses Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer as Gordon and Ashley, two strangers who fall for each other while caring for an injured dog (the titular Colin). In Season 2, the pair continues to learn how to be together while fighting to get Colin back after giving him away to another family. All eight episodes of Season 2 are now streaming on Paramount+.
• “Only Murders in the Building”: Hulu promised a star-studded fourth season of its Emmy-winning comedy, and it’s more than delivered on that front. But this week’s episode raises the bar yet again by adding another celebrity to the mix in the form of tennis legend (and beloved “Never Have I Ever” narrator) John McEnroe, who cameos as himself in “Adaptation,” which finds our favorite trio tangling with the cast and crew of the Hollywood movie based on their lives and hit podcast. The episode is now streaming on Hulu.
• “Saturday Night Live”: Jean Smart, fresh off winning her third Emmy for her portrayal of comedian Deborah Vance in Max’s “Hacks” (now an Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series), makes her “SNL” debut when she hosts the season premiere of the long-running sketch comedy series. This weekend marks the kickoff of the NBC show’s 50th season, which is kind of unbelievable when you actually stop and think about it. So perhaps you shouldn’t stop and think about it. The episode airs Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. PT on NBC.
