Austin's Q2 Stadium officially named a zero-waste venue
AUSTIN (KXAN) – Things just got a bit greener for Austin FC's Q2 Stadium as it earned The Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Gold certification, becoming the fifth in the world, according to a press release from Austin FC.
The certification was earned by the stadium for "consistently diverting more than 90 percent of its waste," the release said.
Texas Disposal Systems (TDS), the official waste and recycling partner of Austin FC, developed a new sorting system, that KXAN previously reported on, inside the stadium to help exceed 91% of diversion from the landfills, the release said.
"With this new system, materials discarded throughout Q2 Stadium are now being processed and properly sorted into the correct recycling, compost, and waste streams through a mini Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)," the release said.
Austin FC President Andy Loughnane shared how sustainability was a huge part of the stadium's design.
“Waste impacts all facets of business and changing the way that we use resources will deliver public health benefits, reduce our environmental impact and advance a greener economy," Loughnane said in the release.
