Ange Postecoglou sheds light on Heung-min Son’s contract situation
Things are going pretty well at Tottenham over the last couple of weeks, but there is one pressing matter still hanging over the club: Heung-min Son needs a new contract. When asked by the press today about the situation, Ange Postecoglou suggested he is pushing for Son to stick around.
Does Postecoglou have a say in Sonny’s contract?
Heung-min Son is approaching ten years with Tottenham, and by next summer he will be able to celebrate that huge milestone. However, his current contract also expires in 2025, and it is still relatively unclear what is happening with that.
While it has been stated that Tottenham are very likely to trigger the one-year extension they have on Son’s deal (Tom Barclay), there are concerns that this is not enough and that a proper new contract needs to be signed.
It would seem all parties are happy; Son loves the club, the club loves him, and nobody wants anyone to leave. So, just how much can Ange Postecoglou influence this situation and get the contract arranged?
Speaking to the press ahead of the weekend’s action in the Premier League, Postecoglou confirmed he is eager to see Son stay at the club, but admitted he cannot necessarily dictate who gets offered a new contract.
He said (via Football.London): “I don’t always have the final say, but I like to think my input is significant on it, but the way he’s performing and leading the club we certainly want him to stick around for a while.”
Contract talks haven’t started yet
Son himself was talking about the situation earlier in the week, and when asked about a potential new contract, he insisted talks have not yet begun and that he is solely focused on performing well this season.
He said (via Football.London): “We haven’t talked [about a new contract] yet. It is very clear from me. I am very focused on this season. At this age every second is like a goal, especially this season we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I am taking even more care on this.”
Forget new signings, this is the deal we need
Sadly, I am not in charge of the club, but if I was, the Heung-min Son contract would be the top priority to resolve as soon as possible. I can only imagine that there’s no rush because everyone is more than happy to get it done whenever the time is right, and there is no risk of any issues arising.
