A look at the numbers behind Guglielmo Vicario’s man of the match display vs Qarabag
Guglielmo Vicario is the toast of Tottenham after a stunning man-of-the-match performance in the Europa League win over Qarabag on Thursday night, and a little look at his statistics from the game show just how impressive his display was.
Guglielmo Vicario was unbeatable
After just seven minutes in the Europa League opener, Spurs were down to ten men thanks to Radu Dragusin’s clumsy foul and subsequent red card.
That made Tottenham’s challenge significantly more difficult, but a clinical attacking display, and the heroics of Guglielmo Vicario helped the Lilywhites bag a big 3-0 win to get off to the perfect start.
Pulling out incredible saves, brave clearances, and leading the team with passion, Vicario came away from the game showered with praise, and he has the numbers to back it all up.
According to Fotmob data, Vicario was the best player on the pitch with a rating of 8.4 out of 10. It’s easy to see why, with the Italian registering five saves throughout the game, including three diving saves, one of which stopped a near-certain goal.
He acted as a sweeper on one occasion, too, to save Ben Davies’ blushes in a big decisive clearance that could easily have led to a red card if he got it wrong.
Vicario clocked an 89% passing accuracy rate, with 33 of his 37 passes reaching their target. His long balls could do with some work, though — only one of five were successful (20%).
The Spurs number one made 12 recoveries, one high claim, and had 58 touches in the 90 minutes.
Captain fantastic
To make things even better, Vicario was given the captain’s armband for the last 20 minutes after Heung-min Son was taken off the pitch.
It cemented his place as Ange Postecoglou’s fourth-choice captain within the squad, and Vicario has spoken about how special the moment was for him, claiming he ‘will not forget’ the night he led the team in Europe.
Vicario back to his best
I think Vicario really needed a performance like that after a relatively unsettling start to the season. He’s been under a lot of pressure lately, but that was a really outstanding display that hopefully he can use to fuel him moving forward.
If he can just resolve some of his issues with commanding the area and claiming crosses, he will be the perfect goalkeeper.
